THE PANTANAL
  Land of the Jaguar (2)
Brazil - South America
The Pantanal is the world's largest tropical wetland, stretching across an astonishing 70,000sq miles, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this vast wilderness lies predominantly in  Brazil, but also extends into parts of Bolivia and Paraguay. This extraordinary ecosystem is home to an incredible diversity of species, from Giant River Otter and Capybara to Caiman basking along muddy banks and hundreds of vibrant bird species filling the skies with colour and sound. However, the Pantanal is perhaps most famous for one magnificent resident the Jaguar. Widely regarded as the best place in the world to see wild Jaguars in their natural habitat, Porto Jofre is a small, remote settlement located on the banks of the Cuiabá River in the Northern Pantanal of Brazil.
The peak season for Jaguar spotting in the Pantanal is July to October, when receding waters force Jaguars to the riverbanks to hunt for caiman and capybara. So in late August 2025 we visited Porto Jofre in the  search of the Jaguar. We stayed on a houseboat moored on the Cuiabá River for four nights. We had three days with daily morning and afternoon trips on small speedboats navigating the Cuiabá , Piquiri, and three Brothers rivers. This provided ample opportunity to find and photograph the amazing Jaguar up close in the wild, together with a great variety of other mammals and birds.
The following images are of some of the wildlife we managed to photograph on our trip to       Porto Jofre in the Northern Pantanal.
With the golden dawn light filtering through the canopy, it illuminates the rosette-patterned coat of a Jaguar as it glides silently through the water, its eyes sharp and searching for prey.
Discovering wildlife by small boat in the breathtaking landscape of the Pantanal is an experience we will never forget.
August falls in the dry season in the Pantanal - which is winter in Brazil - when vibrant flowering trees stand out brilliantly against the deep blue sky.
A capybara rests partially submerged in the water, with only its head above the surface, surrounded by a wide expanse of lush green water hyacinth.
A dominant male Jaguar steps out from the dense undergrowth, moving confidently along the riverbank. His golden coat, marked with dark rosettes, shines in the warmth of the early morning sun.
Male Jaguars are larger and heavier than females, with exceptionally muscular builds, broad heads, and powerful jaws. In the Pantanal, abundant prey allows them to grow larger than Jaguars elsewhere, making them the biggest in the world. As dominant apex predators, they are known for hunting caiman and large capybara along the riverbanks.
Jaguars are solitary and highly territorial, with males maintaining larger ranges that often overlap with those of several females. The Pantanal supports one of the highest densities of Jaguars found anywhere within the species’ natural range.
This was a breathtaking sighting. From our small boat drifting slowly along the river in the early morning, with the sun just beginning to rise, we watched this majestic and powerful Jaguar walk calmly along the bank - an unforgettable and truly remarkable experience.
A Jaguar walks along a sunken riverbank in the Pantanal during the dry season. Deep tree roots wind through the exposed soil, revealed by the lowered water level. Soft gold and amber light from the rising sun bathes the scene, warming the Jaguar's coat and the rugged bank. The rich tones shimmer gently in the river, reflecting the quiet beauty of the early morning landscape.
Tracking the jaguar, we move slowly through tranquil backwaters bathed in golden sunlight. The river shimmers in shades of brown and gold, bordered by lush green forest and bright yellow flowers beneath a vivid blue sky.
A photographer searches for the perfect shot of a Jaguar partially hidden in the dense undergrowth.
A Jaguar lies relaxed on a riverbank, partially hidden behind fresh green forest foliage. Its golden coat and dark rosettes blend into the lush surroundings as it rests quietly by the water's edge, alert yet calm within its natural habitat.
The Jaguar relaxes with its chin resting on its paw, calm and watchful in its surroundings.
Interactions between Jaguars and the Yacaré Caiman are among the most dramatic wildlife encounters. Jaguars are powerful apex predators that often prey on caiman, using stealth and a precise, crushing bite to the skull to overcome their armoured bodies. These intense predator–prey moments are a striking example of the natural balance within the wetland ecosystem.
A large Yacaré Caiman basking on a muddy riverbank.
A Jaguar peering from behind dense undergrowth.
Almost completely concealed behind a curtain of vivid green foliage, the Jaguar freezes in silent focus. Bathed in the early morning sunlight, with amber eyes fixed forward and ears alert, it creates a scene charged with anticipation.
With its golden, dappled coat, the Jaguar melts seamlessly into the surrounding vegetation as it silently stalks along the riverbank.
Our small boat drifts silently along a calm river, its bow pointed toward the setting sun. The water glows amber with reflected light, rippling gently beneath the hull. Along the banks, trees stand in dark silhouette against a sky of deep blue and warm gold, while small, puffy clouds drift overhead with edges tinged in amber, suspended between fading daylight and approaching dusk.
Jaguars are excellent climbers and often use tree branches to rest, dry off after swimming, or survey their surroundings. Some individuals have even developed the technique of waiting on a branch overhanging a river and leaping down onto passing caiman or other prey below.
As waters recede during the dry season, striking sandbanks are revealed, shaping the rivers into winding ribbons through the golden landscape.
A fallen tree reaches into the calm backwaters, its weathered branches resting partly in the river. The water lies still and glassy, perfectly reflecting the tree’s trunk and its twisted limbs.
A Cocoi Heron glides low over the wetlands of the Pantanal.
A Jaguar crouching by the river, eyes and ears focused, scanning the water for prey.
With nothing stirring along the river, the Jaguar lies down in the long grass, settling in to rest while keeping a watchful eye on its surroundings.
A big yawn says it all! As the Jaguar relaxes in the sunshine, it is completely at ease in our presence.
With its powerful jaws partially closed after the yawn, the Jaguar's large, sharp lower canines remain visible - a lingering glimpse of strength beneath the calm.
A typical riverside landscape in the Pantanal - winding waterways edged with sandbanks, dense green vegetation, and overhanging trees reflected in the calm, slow-moving water.
The lush green vegetation which thrives in the Pantanal.
A Jaguar sits in the long grass near the river, watching intently for prey.
The cat moves low through the lush green grass, its body close to the ground, its steps slow and controlled. Its head remains low as it advances, barely disturbing the vegetation along the water's edge.
It slowly stalks through the long grass, staring intently ahead. Its amber coat glows softly in the light, while its low, focused posture and fixed gaze reveal quiet intensity.
Reaching the sandy riverbank, the Jaguar continues its stealthy approach, head held low and eyes fixed forward. Its powerful muscles shift beneath its patterned coat, each step deliberate and silent as it moves with focused intent.
The Jaguar stops suddenly, frozen in place with one back leg bent and lifted just off the ground, its body perfectly balanced. Ears pricked forward, it stares intently ahead - every muscle poised in absolute stillness.
After stalking along the riverbank and failing to find a meal, the Jaguar pauses to take a drink.
Then, with effortless grace, the Jaguar slips into the river to cool off.
Another idyllic Pantanal landscape - calm, reflective waters winding between golden sandbanks and lush green vegetation beneath a vast, open sky.
A female Jaguar walks through a natural archway formed by a bent tree branch, and steps gracefully onto the riverbank.
Outstretched in the dappled shade at the edge of the riverbank, she lazily swishes her tail in quiet contentment. Sunlight filters through the green canopy above, rim-lighting the curve of her back and highlighting the rich pattern of her coat. Behind her, a soft tapestry of lush green and yellow leaves glows in the warm light.
She is blind in her left eye.
Although relaxed, she remains alert and aware of every movement around her.
As her eyes slowly close, she surrenders to a brief, peaceful rest in the quiet calm of her surroundings.
After briefly opening her eyes she begins to lower her head.
Totally relaxed, she rests her chin gently on her paws, her eyes half closed in peaceful contentment.
Suddenly she lifts her head - has she seen or heard something? Her eyes are wide and her ears thrust forward, every sense instantly alert.
In one fluid motion, she rises to her feet and turns, slipping silently into the forest.
A Pantanal riverside landscape shimmers with vivid green.
This collared, male Jaguar lies deep within thick undergrowth, barely visible through tangled foliage as it feeds on a large caiman, the dense greenery concealing most of the powerful predator and its prey.
He pauses from feeding on the huge caiman, his mouth closed and his whiskered beard stained deep red with blood. Partially concealed by dense foliage, a piercing amber eye stares through a narrow gap in the leaves, intense and unblinking.
The Jaguar lifts his head from his meal, his nose, upper mouth, and chin are smeared with blood. His amber eyes narrow and his lips curl back as he begins to snarl, building to a low warning rumble.
The Jaguar plants his powerful paw firmly on the caiman’s back and bites into its tough, armoured skin. Muscles tensed, he pulls with his teeth, tearing through the hide to reveal the pale pink flesh beneath - a display of raw strength and survival.
As boats meander slowly along the winding waterways, engines low and steady, their passengers scan the shadows beneath the overhanging trees in the search for Jaguars.
Another Jaguar sighting reveals this majestic animal sitting upright in the long vegetation, alert and watchful as it scans the landscape for prey.
This Jaguar quietly licks its wounds, possibly caused during a tussle with a caiman.
Further large, bloodied puncture wounds across the Jaguar's back are stark marks that hint at a fierce encounter and the harsh realities of life in the wild.
A recently exposed sandbank, reveals the steady drop in water levels as the dry season takes hold.
A resting Yacaré Caiman lies motionless on a muddy sandbank, its armoured body blending with the earth. Considered a natural rival of the Jaguar, it waits in still vigilance along the water's edge.
A Jaguar sits quietly among the rich green vegetation on the riverbank, calm and alert.
From its seated position, the Jaguar suddenly springs into action, head low and focused. It lifts its left paw deliberately and steps forward, shifting from stillness to silent, purposeful movement.
The Jaguar stalks silently through thick vegetation near the edge of the riverbank, its body low and controlled as it moves with focused, predatory intent.
The sun starbursts through a silhouetted tree, rays piercing between darkened branches with a soft green hue, casting a luminous glow that filters gently across the scene.
This Jaguar walks along the riverbank, focused, head low and eyes scanning the shoreline as it searches patiently for prey.
The Jaguar stalks along the shaded riverbank, moving through dappled light beneath bare, arching tree branches. Its body stays low and fluid, blending into shadow as it advances with quiet, deliberate steps.
Out of the shadows, the Jaguar stands on a sandy beach, its golden coat glowing in the sunlight as it surveys the river with a calm, commanding presence.
A sandy riverbank stretches along the water's edge, pale sand warmed by the sun.
A determined Jaguar swims silently through the muddy water, powerful limbs cutting beneath the surface as it hunts. Its focused gaze locks onto a lurking caiman, tension rising in the still, murky current.
The Jaguar freezes mid-hunt as the caiman’s explosive tail-splash shatters the calm. Drenched in a burst of muddy spray, the powerful cat stands its ground, water cascading over its rosette-marked coat - startled yet unflinching as the unseen caiman makes its frantic escape beneath the surface.
The Jaguar stands motionless after missing the caiman and it stares intently with piercing amber eyes. Its whiskers bristle as droplets of water cling to them and drip steadily from its chin, while tension still lingers in the air.
What an incredible morning. With the sun just rising and our low position in the boat being almost at water level, the experience felt completely immersive. Watching a Jaguar hunt at such close quarters in the golden light of dawn was raw, intimate, and utterly unforgettable.
The Jaguar remains determined, muscles tightening beneath its rosette-marked coat as it resumes the search for prey, moving forward with focused, relentless purpose.
The Jaguar moves slowly, chest-deep in the water, head thrust forward in stalking mode. Water drips from its chin, sending soft ripples across the calm surface as it advances in silent focus.
As the Jaguar moves silently through a dark, shaded stretch of water, the amber surface in the foreground glows in the sunlight. Suddenly, splashes shatter the calm as a startled animal makes a quick getaway.
The Jaguar stops in its tracks and lifts its head high, water dripping from its chin as it stares into the distance. After a long pause, it turns and steps out of the water.
Having emerged from the river, the Jaguar vigorously shakes its head and body, spraying droplets of water as it sheds the excess from its thick, rosette-marked fur.
With one final shudder, the Jaguar shakes out its coat, scattering the last droplets before its fur settles, sleek and dry once more.
Now dry, the Jaguar walks along the riverbank, moving with steady, purposeful strides as it continues its patrol.
Walking with greater purpose, the Jaguar moves along the shaded riverbank, staring straight ahead, its focused gaze fixed intently on the river.
The Jaguar suddenly stops in its stride, legs drawn together and back slightly bent as if frozen in motion. It lifts its head high, staring intently toward the river, as if it has spotted the faintest movement beneath the surface.
A powerful Caiman basks on the sandy beach, its armored body stretched out under the sun. With jaws slightly open, it reveals large, sharp canine teeth while resting in calm but watchful stillness.
Walking gingerly along a thick tree branch, the Jaguar balances its muscular body with quiet precision. Its tail extends for stability, paws gripping the bark as it moves with controlled, silent confidence.
The powerful Jaguar suddenly stops and looks down, its body tensing as it peers below. A large, deep red gash across its back stands out against its golden coat, hinting at a recent and brutal struggle.
The wounded Jaguar continues down the tree branch despite the deep red gash across its back. Its movements are slower but determined, claws gripping the bark as it descends with tense, controlled resolve.
As the wounded Jaguar comes fully into view, more injuries are revealed along its side and back leg. Its outstretched hind leg is matted with dark blood stains, yet it continues forward with grim determination.
A stunning, colourful landscape stretches beneath a wide blue sky dotted with white, puffy clouds. Vivid green forests and red flowering trees shimmer in the warm, brilliant light.
A powerful Jaguar stands on large, twisting tree roots, front paws gripping the bark with claws exposed. Its head is lowered in a stalking posture, ears forward, and amber eyes fixed ahead.
Standing motionless, the Jaguar's eyes are wide and totally focussed. Its unblinking gaze is locked onto something moving just ahead.
Exposed tree roots stretch along the shoreline, revealed by falling water levels. Once submerged, they now twist over damp earth and cracked mud, darkened and textured by the retreating water.
Clambering over thick vegetation and a fallen tree stump near the river’s edge, the Jaguar pushes through the dense growth with steady, determined strength.
The still backwaters of the Pantanal lie glassy and undisturbed, reflecting the surrounding greenery like a mirror.
A powerful Jaguar prowls the banks of the Cuiabá River, its size and strength magnified by the small safari boat in the foreground, emphasising the raw scale and presence of the great cat in its wild domain.
Walking calmly into the river for a swim, the Jaguar's chin touches the water first before it slips forward, the surface parting gently around its muscular frame.
The cat swims steadily through the calm waters, head low and eyes focused, scanning the river ahead in search of prey.
We watched as the Jaguar continued swimming along the Cuiabá River before crossing to the opposite bank. Jaguars cross wide rivers with ease, using their broad, sturdy paws as powerful paddles to navigate muddy terrain and deep, steady currents.
Reaching the opposite bank, the Jaguar moves with silent precision. Suddenly, an explosive splash - then in a blur of muscle and spray, it surges upward and lifts a caiman clear out of the water.
The powerful cat heaves the struggling caiman from the river, its muscular tail lashing skyward as water explodes in a curtain of spray.
Dragging the struggling caiman onto the shore, the Jaguar delivers a precise, crushing bite to its skull - one of the most powerful in the animal kingdom - bringing the struggle to a swift end.
The images of the Jaguar attacking and killing the caiman were taken from the deck of our houseboat, some distance from the action. It just goes to show - you never quite know when the next burst of drama will unfold in the wild.
